HISTORY

An elegant private house with a modernist taste built in the first decade of the 1900s. Purchased by the Ministry for Cultural and Environmental Heritage in 1992 and completely restored, it houses the headquarters of the Museum of Glass Art.

Villa Rosa, through its architectural and artistic merits, has strong liberty features and at the same time summarizes one of the most significant moments in the history of Altare, a village characterized by an ancient and important glassmaking tradition.

In this context, the figure of Monsignor Giuseppe Bertolotti emerges, commissioned the construction of Villa Rosa, who entrusted its design to Nicolò Campora, an architect from Savona, attentive to technical and stylistic innovations in the field of international architecture.

The many patterns that adorn the interior walls often match the ceilings, floors, staircase and window railings, as well as the stuccooes and windows decals that mimic liberty floralism. Modernist-style furniture and chandeliers, stoves and heaters are the hallmarks of the furnishings.

Now, the Museum offers its visitors a collection of works ranging from the 17th century to the present day, as well as a collection of tools craftsmanship, supported by new multimedia tools to illustrate all stages of glass processing.

In the Museum, the Specialized Glass Library holds a large collection of books and magazines concerning the world of this fascinating product, from the most ancient technological texts to the catalogues of some of the major contemporary exhibitions.

In the gardens of Villa Rosa, there is a demonstration furnace for the production of blown glass. Regularly active and all year round, Villa Rosa offers a unique opportunity to see real master glassmakers at work which an attractive complement to the visit of the villa and its museum.

The Villa is in concession to the Municipality of Altare, owner of the museum’s collection. The I.S.V.V.V.A.V. Foundation – Institute for the Study of Glass and Glass Art – in charge of the Museum, takes care of its collection, ticketing service and surveillance.
